After breakfast in Kathmandu, take a flight to Tumlingtar. The flight to Tumlingtar takes approximately 45-50 minutes and offers gorgeous views of the Himalayas.

Standard health precautions should be taken: drinking water, hygiene, and food caution. As always, pack a basic first-aid kit and consult with a doctor before your trek.
What kind of wildlife would I expect from the trek?
Diverse wildlife exists in the area, such as red panda, himalayan black bear, and different kinds of birds. Respect wildlife and keep your distance if you see any creatures.
Is independent trekking possible?
Independent trekking is indeed possible, but highly recommended is hiring a local guide and/or porter for safety, navigation, and cultural insight.
What are the foodstuffs along the trek?
The food here used to be primarily local Nepali, such as dal bhat, momo, and noodles. Most teahouses would also prepare Western-style cuisine.
How do I prepare myself against altitude sickness?
Reduce the risk of altitude sickness through proper acclimatization, either slow ascents, drinking lots of water, or not drinking at all. Consult your physician about Diamox or other alternatives before taking the trek.
Is the trek easy?
The trek towards Makalu Base Camp is moderate to difficult as it is high in altitude and the distance of trekking. Reasonably fit and ascent experience is advised before this trek.
How high do Makalu Base Camp go?
Makalu Base Camp lies at about 4870 meters altitude.
What kind of accommodations can I expect?
Generally, along the trekking routes, there will be teahouses or lodges owned by local families. Sometimes, one will have to camp in cases in an area within higher altitudes.
What should be packed for the trek?
The basic necessaries include:
● Trekking boots ● Warm clothing (layers) ● Sleeping bag ● Trekking poles ● First aid kit ● Water purification tablets or filter ● Snacking bars and energy bars ● Sun protection (sunscreen, sunglasses, hat)
Is the trail easily marked for navigation?
It features signage, mantras, prayer flags, and stones yet may be harder to navigate in undulating and remote stretches. For detailed trekking in these areas, accompany the journey by hiring a trek guide.
What is the most difficult part of trekking?
High altitude: AMS (acute mountain sickness) could develop because of the elevation.
Terrain: Steep rise and fall angles, rocky paths, vomit styles of movement, and an occasional risk of a landslide.
Isolation: Limited medical facilities and means of communication in some remote areas.
Will hot showers be available?
Yes, you can get hot showers at lower villages for a small price. At a greater altitude, he may not have access to a shower. Bring wet wipes for hygiene.
What are the risks of natural disasters?
Landslides: These happen during the monsoon; therefore one would not want to do trekking during this time.
Earthquakes: Though rare, Nepal is seismically active; know safety measures in teahouses.
Can I extend the trek?
Yes, you could extend the hike to Baruntse Base Camp or spend a few extra days wandering the Barun Valley.
How many hours do I walk every single day?
Will vary between 6-8 days, with shorter days designated for acclimatization or to go into higher altitudes.
What animals can I see?
Himalayan Tahr, Musk Deer, Snow Leopards (they are really rare), Red Panda, and a few very different birds like Pheasants.
How do I prepare physically?
Cardio (running, cycling). Strength (leg exercises such as squats, lunges).
Endurance (practice hiking with a backpack on hilly terrain).
What food do you get?
Dal, that's lentils and rice, noodles, momo - dumplings, vegetarian meals, and simple dishes. There're some snacks (chocolate and energy bars) in the villages.
Is it worrying with altitude sickness?
Yes, altitude sickness happens at high altitudes, above 2,500m. The trek will have a few acclimatisation days, and you will be advised to keep hydrated while avoiding intense activity.
Is the use of a guide and porter necessary?
Not a must-have but would be better to have while trekking for reasons of safety, navigation, and heavy gear- carrying. The guides will give the itinerary based on their local knowledge and porters will carry your luggage so you can trek comfortably.

I am from the Netherlands, and I did the Makalu Base Camp Trek with Eco Holidays Nepal. The experience was fantastic. The entire 15-day journey was unforgettable, and it is a memory I will cherish for a lifetime.
