Itinerary

The Mardi Himal Helicopter Tour is a short and spectacular aerial adventure in the Himalayas. This helicopter adventure beautifully captures the very soul of the Annapurna region within a few hours. This aerial journey is ideal for travelers who want to witness the grandeur of the Himalayas without the physical challenge of trekking. This entire tour typically lasts around 2 to 3 hours from Pokhara. However, every moment in the air will feel extraordinary and is filled with stunning aerial views of snow-clad peaks, lush valleys and remote highlands.

Phase 1: Pre-Flight Preparation and Departure from Pokhara Airport (800 m)

Your heli ride to Mardi Himal begins early in the morning, when the skies are clearest and the visibility of the mountains is breathtaking. After a light breakfast, you will be transferred to the Pokhara Airport. Upon arrival at the airport, you will attend a short briefing session before boarding the helicopter. As the helicopter lifts off, Pokhara city slowly shrinks below and the  Phewa Lake glistens like glass. Then, flying over the green ridges surrounding the valley, terraced farmlands and forested hills, you will head toward the Himalayas.

Phase 2: Aerial Journey Over the Annapurna Region

The helicopter will fly north following the natural curve of the hills toward the Annapurna Sanctuary. This part of the flight is one of the most mesmerizing segments you will see. You will glide over the traditional Gurung villages scattered on the hillsides, dense rhododendron forests and winding mountain trails of the Mardi Himal Trek route. As you fly higher, the scenery changes dramatically from green valleys to rugged alpine slopes. Soon, the towering peaks of Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, Macchhapuchhre and Mardi Himal rise in full glory, almost feels like at hand’s reach. The transition from the subtropical lowlands to the icy world above 4,000 meters happens within minutes, creating a surreal sense of contrast.

Phase 3: Landing at Mardi Himal Base Camp (4,500 m)

After around 20 to 25 minutes of aerial journey, your helicopter will land near Mardi Himal Base Camp. This is one of the least crowded yet most rewarding viewpoints in the Annapurna range. From the landing spot, you will be able to enjoy a 360° panorama of Himalayan giants like  Machhapuchhre, Hiunchuli, Dhaulagiri, Mardi Himal itself and the Annapurna ranges.

During this landing part, you will have approximately 15 to 20 minutes on the ground. This timeframe will be enough to step out, breathe in the crisp mountain air, take photographs and enjoy the tranquility on the laps of the Himalayas. The serenity and the closeness of the peaks make this stop a truly magical and otherworldly experience.

Phase 4: Return Flight to Pokhara

After absorbing the breathtaking atmosphere and capturing the magical moments on your lens, it is time to proceed further with the return journey. This return flight offers you chance to admire the beauty of the Himalayan peaks and diverse landscape below from a different perspective. As you get close to Pokhara, the tranquil blue waters of Phewa Lake reappear below, shimmering under the warm sun. The descent feels smooth and peaceful, wrapping up your short Himalayan escape on a truly memorable note.

Within just a few hours, the Mardi Himal Helicopter Tour lets you experience what would normally take trekkers several days to experience the pristine beauty of the Annapurna region. It is a perfect adventure for time-bound travelers, couples seeking a romantic mountain experience or anyone who dreams of touching the Himalayas without having to bear the trekking challenges.

Essential Information

Best Time to Do Mardi Himal Helicopter Tour

The Mardi Himal Helicopter Tour packages can be operated throughout the year within ideal windows. However, certain months offer a much clearer and safer flying experience compared to others. As the weather condition plays a crucial role in mountain visibility and flight stability, choosing the right season will ensure that you will enjoy an unforgettable aerial adventure in the Himalayas without any interruption.

Spring (March to May):

The spring season is one of the most ideal times for the Mardi Himal Helicopter Tour. During this season, the skies are usually clear in the morning, the weather is calm and the hills below are painted with blooming rhododendron flowers. The combination of lush greenery at lower altitudes and dazzling white peaks in the distance creates a beautiful visual contrast. Also, the temperatures at the base camp remain moderate. So, you will be able to comfortably step out and enjoy your time during the landing at the base camp.

Autumn (September to November):

Among all the seasons, autumn is the most popular and stable season for helicopter flights in Nepal. After the monsoon, the atmosphere clears up completely and offers sharp visibility of the Annapurna and Machhapuchhre ranges. The mornings are crisp, the skies are deep blue and the mountain vistas appear brighter and clearer than ever. This fall season provides almost guaranteed panoramic views and there are minimal chances of weather-related delays, making it the top choice for most travelers.

Winter (December to February):

The helicopter tour to Mardi Himal is also possible and can be exceptionally rewarding in the winter season. If you enjoy the snow-covered landscapes and sense of isolation, the deal doesn’t get better than this. During winter, the air is cool and dry, so visibility often remains outstanding. However, early morning temperatures at Mardi Himal Base Camp can drop below freezing points. So proper layering is essential for the flight.

Mardi Himal Helicopter Tour Packages

Monsoon (June to August):

This season is considered the least favorable period for a heli ride to Mardi Himal. Monsoon season brings unpredictable weather, frequent rain and heavy cloud cover. Helicopter flights are less common during this season due to low visibility and potential turbulence. While operators may still run flights during short clear weather windows, this rainy season is not the most reliable time to plan your tour.

Safety Guidelines for Helicopter Tour to Mardi Himal

Your safety is the top priority during any helicopter flight in the Himalayas. The Mardi Heli Tour is short and operated by professional pilots with years of mountain flying experience. Still, following basic safety protocols will ensure a smooth, comfortable and risk-free adventure. Here are some important safety guidelines to keep in mind as a passenger:

  • Listen Carefully to the Pre-Flight Briefing

Before taking off to navigate the Himalayan terrain, you will receive a short safety orientation at Pokhara Airport. You need to pay close attention to your pilot or ground crew as they explain important instructions during this session. Normally, a briefing before flight includes guidance on use of seat belts, the procedure to safely enter and exit the aircraft and what to do during takeoff and landing.

  • Avoid Moving Around During Flight

While you are inside the helicopter, stay in your assigned seat and avoid unnecessary movement. Leaning too far toward the window or shifting weight abruptly can affect balance. The small helicopters are more sensitive to movements. You should remember that seating is arranged based on weight distribution. So, don’t move unnecessarily during the flight and ask permission from the pilot even if you have to.

  • Prepare for High Altitude Conditions

Although during the Mardi Himal Helicopter Tour you will only spend around 15 to 20 minutes at Mardi Himal Base Camp, you will quickly jump to a major altitude point. At the base camp, the elevation is around 4,500 meters. You might show mild symptoms like light-headedness or shortness of breath. Thus, it is crucial to move slowly, stay hydration and inform the pilot immediately if you feel uneasy.

  • Follow Boarding and Exiting Procedures Carefully

While doing Helicopter Tour to Mardi Himal you should only approach or leave the helicopter when the pilot or crew instructs you to do so. Always move from the front of the aircraft and keep your head low and holding onto any loose clothing or accessories. You need to avoid the tail section completely. The tail rotor is invisible when spinning and it can be extremely dangerous getting close to it.

  • Respect Weather-Related Decisions

Flights to the Himalayas are highly dependent on the weather conditions; the Mardi Himal Helicopter Tour is no exception.  If your flight is delayed or rescheduled, it is purely done for safety reasons. So, trust the pilot’s judgment as they are trained to make these decisions based on visibility, wind and air pressure conditions. If your flight is on hold for weather-related issues, then it will most likely be postponed or rescheduled for the next day when the conditions improve.

  • Choose a Reputed and Licensed Operator

Always book for the Mardi Himal Helicopter Tour packages via a reputable, well-established and government-certified company. Reliable operators maintain their helicopters regularly and only employ skilled mountain pilots who understand the local terrain and unpredictable Himalayan weather patterns. So, if you book through well-known agencies like Eco Holidays Nepal, you can enjoy your aerial adventure, you can stay assured on the safety, comfort and experience part.

Meals and Refreshments

The Mardi Himal Helicopter Tour is a short and scenic flight that generally lasts around 2 to 3 hours from Pokhara. So, there is no provision for full meals like a trek in this journey. However, light refreshments and water are usually provided by the flight operator. And there are a few things you should know about food and drinks during the experience.

Before the Flight

You should have a light breakfast before your departure. Flights usually take off early in the morning when the skies are clear, so a quick meal such as toast, fruits or tea/coffee will keep you comfortable without feeling too heavy during the flight. Avoid overeating or consuming alcohol before flying, as it may cause nausea due to altitude changes or cabin pressure.

During the Flight

The helicopter ride itself does not include meals, as there’s no space or time for in-flight meals. You will be flying at high altitude for a relatively short duration and most passengers are more focused on the scenery than eating. However, bottled water is available onboard and some operators also provide juicebox and light snacks. Still, it's best if you can carry small snacks like energy bars, dry fruits or chocolate with you for the flight.

At Mardi Himal Base Camp

While landing at Mardi Himal Base Camp, you will get about 15 to 20 minutes to relish the beauty of the Himalayas from up close, take photographs and enjoy the stunning view. There are no tea houses or food stalls at this altitude. So, don’t expect meals or warm beverages there. If you wish, you can bring a thermos of tea or coffee from Pokhara to enjoy while admiring the mountains.

Mardi Himal Helicopter Tour Packages

Necessary Permits

To take part in the Mardi Himal Helicopter Tour, it is essential to understand the permit rules that apply to helicopters entering the Annapurna region. The permit system in Nepal is not just a formality; it also contributes to maintaining sustainable tourism, preserving the fragile mountain environment and supporting local conservation efforts.

Mardi Himal lies within the Annapurna Conservation Area, a protected region managed under the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP). This conservation zone protects biodiversity, culture and landscapes of the Annapurna range. So, for the Mardi Himal Helicopter Tour in this area, you need to obtain two key permits:

  • Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP)
  • Trekkers’ Information Management System (TIMS) Card

If you are doing this helicopter tour with a reputable agency, you don’t need to handle the paperwork yourself. Your tour operator will coordinate all necessary flight permissions and conservation fees with the relevant authorities. Even if your itinerary includes landing at the Mardi Himal Base Camp or a short ground stop, the agency ensures all required permissions are secured in advance.

Mardi Himal Helicopter Tour Cost

The cost of the Mardi Himal Helicopter Tour depends on several factors such as group size, flight route and whether the trip is operated as a private or sharing flight. On average, the Mardi Himal Helicopter Tour costs between US$ 500 and US$ 900 per person for a group-sharing flight from Pokhara. For those who prefer a private charter, the total cost typically ranges above US$ 2,400. A single helicopter is able to accommodate up to five passengers at a time.

The price generally includes the round-trip helicopter flight from Pokhara to Mardi Himal Base Camp, airport transfers, necessary permits and service charges. Some companies also include refreshments or breakfast at the base camp, depending on the package you have chosen. It is important to understand that rates can vary slightly between operators and seasons. During peak months like spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November), prices may be a little higher due to increased demand.

When booking your flight, it is important to confirm what is included in the package such as landing duration, permit handling and taxes, etc. This way, you will be able to save yourself from the hidden costs later. Choosing a reliable company with experienced pilots will ensure not only value for money but also a safe and well-organized Himalayan flying experience.

Weather Dependency and Contingency Plan

The Mardi Himal Helicopter Tour is highly dependent on weather conditions. The Himalayan region is known for its unpredictable weather. At the higher part of the mountain, clear skies can quickly turn cloudy or windy without any warning. As the helicopters require visual flight conditions for safe navigation, the Mardi Heli Tour is only operated when the visibility and wind levels meet safety standards.

The best time for smooth flight operations is during the peak seasons like spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). These seasons offer clear skies, stable weather and the best aerial views of the Annapurna range. However, even within these ideal periods, early morning flights are usually preferred. During the morning, the climatic conditions are perfect for high-altitude flying and as the day progresses, the weather starts deteriorating.

Mardi Heli Tour

In case of bad weather or poor visibility, your heli flight may be delayed, rescheduled or even canceled. Your safety will always take priority over timing. If your flight cannot depart as planned, the tour operators will either refund the amount or reschedule it next favorable window.

For travelers on tight schedules, it is wise to keep an extra buffer day in Pokhara just in case of weather delays. Having a contingency plan ensures that you don’t feel pressured by time constraints and can still enjoy the experience when the conditions are perfect. Remember, in the Himalayas, patience is often rewarded with the most spectacular views once the skies finally clear.
