Trip Overview

Mardi Himal Trek 8 days is a short yet incredibly rewarding Himalayan adventure that takes you deep into the Annapurna sanctuary without the commitment to long-duration classic routes. This trek is perfectly designed for trekkers with limited time who still want to relish a true Himalayan experience. Mardi Himal Trekking blends cultural discovery, forest trails, dramatic ridge walks, and high-altitude adventure into one compact itinerary plan. Within just over a week, you will be able to enjoy the remarkable diversity Nepal has to offer.

The trek leads you to the Mardi Himal Base Camp (4,500m/ 14,763ft), one of the peaceful and quieter trails in the north-central part of the Himalayas. As you climb higher, you will be able to enjoy the stunning views of Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, Mardi Himal, and even distant Annapurna I on clear days. Unlike many crowded routes, this ridge walking adventure takes you across the serene rhododendron forest and quiet mountain camps, where you feel more closer to the mountains. Your trek Mardi Himal Nepal will begin with cultural exploration in Kathmandu and the scenic drive to Pokhara.

Then, you will gradually ascend across subtropical woodlands to the rugged alpine terrain of the Mardi Himal Base Camp. Each day in your Mardi Himal Trek from Kathmandu unfolds naturally, walking though luch landscape and traditional villages, resting in warm and cozy teahouses, and climbing higher toward the spectacular Himalayan vistas. If you are looking for authentic mountain scenery, manageable trekking difficulty, and a less commercialized trekking route, then the Mardi Himal Trek 8 Days is an ideal choice for you.

Drive to Pokhara (822m/ 2,6696ft) from Kathmandu: 6 to 8 hours

This day of your Mardi Himal Trek itinerary, transition you from Kathmandu Valley to Pokhara, the gateway city of treks in the Annapurna region. Your scenic drive follows the Prithvi Highway, tracing the course ofthe  Trishuli River across rural settlements and terraced hills. Leaving Kathmandu, you will pass Thankot and descend toward Naubise before continuing alongside the river valley.

You will drive past the roadside markets, small tea stalls, and a cluster of traditional houses. As your drive progresses, the terrain starts to open up, and you will cross Mugling Bazaar. From here, the road bends westward toward Pokhara, and on a clear day, you will be able to enjoy the distant views of the Himalayan peaks. By the time you reach Pokhara, the pace feels calmer and more relaxed than Kathmandu.

This tourist hub sits beside Phew Lake with Machhapuchhre and Annapurna rising dramatically in the background. Pokhara is the primary gateway to the treks in the Annapurna region, including the trekking to Mardi Himal. After checking in at your hotel, you can take an evening walk along the lakeside, enjoy a quiet dinner, rest well, and prepare for the mountain trail that you will be walking on from tomorrow onwards.

  2. Duration:6-7 hrs
  3. Distance:200km
Day 04

Drive from Pokhara to Kande (1,770m/ 5,807ft) and then trek to Forest Camp (2,600m/ 8,530ft): 1.5 hours (drive) and 4 to 5 hours (trek)

Your real mountain journey begins today. After breakfast in Pokhara, you will drive northward toward Kande, a small roadside settlement perched above the Pokhara Valley. The drive climbs gradually, passing Hemja Village and scattered hillside farms before reaching the trailhead at Kande. After taking a short break here to stretch your legs and admire the views, you will begin your walk.

The trail from Kande ascends immediately on stone steps toward the Australian Camp. This is a popular viewpoint that offers early glimpses of Annapurna South and Macchapuchhre on clear days. From here, the trail continues toward Pothana, a charming Gurung village. Then, you will move along the lush part of the trekking route, across the lush rhododendron and oak forests. During the final segment, the trail narrows and becomes more secluded.

You will then finally arrive at Forest Camp, which is also known as Kokar among the locals. This is a small cluster of teahouses that sits deep within the forest. Forest Camp has a quiet and calm ambience, a perfect overnight stop for the first day’s trek.

  1. Max. Elevation:2600
  2. Duration:5-6hr
  3. Distance:25km
Day 05

Forest Camp to High Camp (3,550m/ 11,646ft): 6 to 7 hours

This is one of the most scenic days in your Mardi Himal Trek 8 Days. Leaving Forest Camp, you will follow the trail that steadily climbs through dense rhododendron forest toward Low Camp. As you gain altitude, the trees start to thin out, and you will be able to catch the first dramatic views of Macchapuchhre from clear sections. Beyond the Low Camp, the trail continues toward Badal Danda. It is a magnificent ridge section that often floats above clouds in the early morning, hence it earned the name ‘Cloud Hill’, a.k.a ‘Badal Danda’.

As you continue walking further, the forest starts to recede, and the trail opens into alpine terrain. Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and Macchapuchhre start to dominate the skyline at a closer range. During the final leg, your trekking route ascends along a narrow ridge toward Middle Camp and finally takes you to High Camp. Stepping into this camp feels like reaching the heart of the Annapurna region.

High Camp feels exposed with panoramic views unfolding on both sides of the ridges. Likewise, the sense of remoteness intensifies, and the mountains appear dramatically closer. You have gained significant altitude today, so proper rest and hydration are essential in preparation for tomorrow’s early morning hike to Mardi Himal Base Camp.

  1. Max. Elevation:3550
  2. Duration:6-7 hrs
  3. Distance:7km
Day 06

High Camp to Mardi Himal Base Camp (4,500m/ 14,763ft) and trek to Siding (1,750m/ 5,741ft) Village, followed by a drive to Pokhara: 7 to 8 hours (trek) and 2 to 3 hours (drive)

This is the highlight day of your Mardi Himal Trek from Kathmandu. You will begin your walk before sunrise and climb toward Mardi Himal Base Camp steadily. The trail follows a narrow alpine ridge with steep drops on both sides. This landscape creates a dramatic and unforgettable mountain atmosphere. As you climb higher, the vegetation disappears, and the terrain becomes rocky and windswept.

The climb passes through Mardi Himal Viewpoint, which is at an altitude of 4,200 meters (13,779 feet). The final push to Mardi Himal Base Camp is gradual but demanding due to altitude. Standing at 4,500 meters, you will be surrounded by a 360-degree panorama of the Himalayan giants like Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and Macchapuchhre, along with Mardi Himal. Unlike the Everest Base Camp or Annapurna Base Camp, Mardi Himal Base Camp feels raw and intimate.

With fewer crowds, you will be able to have a more personal mountain connection here. After spending some time at base camp relishing the surreal ambiance and taking photographs, you will move along a different route toward Siding Village. This descent is long and steady, which transitions from alpine ridges back into forested sections and terraced farmlands. As you approach Siding, the atmosphere changes completely. The traditional stone houses, cultivated fields, and local village life return with full swing.

After taking a short break at Siding, you will begin your driving journey back to Pokhara. After days in the mountains, the comfort of a hotel bed and a warm shower feels deeply satisfying. This transition from ridge-top solitude to lakeside relaxation marks a powerful conclusion to your Himalayan trekking experience.

  1. Max. Elevation:4500
  2. Duration:7-8hrs
  3. Distance:8km
Day 07

Drive back to Kathmandu (1,400m/ 4,593ft): 6 to 8 hours

After enjoying a hearty breakfast in Pokhara, enjoying the stunning mountain vistas, your journey today retraces the scenic highway back to Kathmandu. Leaving the calm lakeside atmosphere behind, you will follow the road that winds out of Pokhara Valley and reconnect with Prithvi Highway. The drive once again follows the Trishuli River corridor. The terraced hills, roadside villages, and suspension bridges along the way create a constantly changing landscape outside your window.

You will pass familiar junction towns before gradually climbing back toward Kathmandu Valley. Although this day’s drive is long, it offers a quiet transition from mountain rhythm back to city life. Upon arrival in Kathmandu, we will transfer you to your respective hotel. You will have a free evening for souvenir shopping, a celebratory dinner, or simply sitting back at the rooftop cafe reflecting on your journey.

  1. Max. Elevation:1400
  2. Duration:6-8hrs
  3. Distance:200 km

Essential Information

Mardi Himal Trek Difficulty

If you are curious about this off-beaten trekking experience, the Mardi Himal Trek difficulty is at a moderate level. Yes, the Mardi Himal Trek route does not involve technical climbing or the need for glacier travel. However, you will still need to overcome the consistent uphill sections, and need good endurance and the ability to handle altitude upto 4,500 meters (14,763 feet) at Mardi Himal Base Camp. The first trekking day from Kande to Forest Camp, after the drive from Pokhara, feels manageable. Your trekking trail moves across the forested segment with gradual elevation gain.

But the difficulty increases significantly beyond the Forest Camp. The trekking stretch from Forest Cap to Low Camp, Badal Danda, and High Camp involves long ridge climbs with continuous ascent. As you climb higher, the air becomes thinner, vegetation reduces, and the terrain becomes more exposed. The most demanding stretch physically on this route is the section from High Camp to Mardi Himal Base Camp. Even if this section doesn’t involve technical components, the early morning cold, narrow ridge, and high altitude make the base camp push challenging.

If you don’t mind your hydration and pacing, you might catch the symptoms of altitude sickness. So, in overall the difficulty of the Mardi Himal Trek is demanding but definitely not challenging. With proper preparation, managed pace, and respect for altitude, even a beginner can complete this journey with ease. Trek Mardi Himal Nepal is suitable for:

  • First-time Himalayan trekkers with decent fitness
  • Travelers short on time who still want close-up views of mountains
  • Those seeking quiter alternative to busy trails like the Everest Base Camp Trek and the Annapurna Base Camp Trek

**Note: Compared to longer high-altitude treks in the Annapurna region, Mardi is shorter and logistically simpler. So, even a beginner can take on this trail for the true Himalayan feel**

Mardi Himal Trek 8 Days

Mardi Himal Trek Best Season

Your chosen window completely shapes your trekking experience. That’s why it is important to understand the Mardi Himal Trek Best Season, the point that offers unrivaled experiences and memories. Typically, there are two seasons that are considered the best period for Mardi Himal Trekking: Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November). Mardi Himal Trek best months take the majority of space in these peak seasons. If you time your trek during these seasons, you will be rewarded with clear mountain views and accompanied by stable weather and comfortable

Spring (March, April, and May)

Spring is considered one of the most rewarding times to do the Mardi Himal Trek 8 Days. During spring, the forest between Kande, Deurali, and Forest Camp bursts into a magical wonderland covered by diverse shades of rhododendrons and other wildflowers. As for temperatures, they are warm during the day, generally averaging between 10°C and 20°C. The nights can be cool but manageable at the higher altitudes, and at the base camp, temperatures can range from 0°C to -5°C.

Visibility is also excellent during the mornings. You will be able to catch stunning views of Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and Machhapuchhre from your stops along the way. By late May, the humidity starts to increase as the pre-monsoon reaches the doorstep.

Autumn (September, November, and December)

The autumn season is considered one of the most stable trekking seasons in Nepal. This season arrives after the monsoon washes up the dust from the air, and the skies turn crystal clear. The ridgewalking sections, which the Mardi Himal Trek Annapurna is popular for, become especially dramatic during this fall season. You will be able to relish uninterrupted Himalayan panoramas on both sides as you head toward the base camp.

You should expect the temperatures to be slightly cooler than in spring. The temperatures usually hover around 10°C to 15°C at the mid-range, although slightly warmer at lower altitudes. As for the high-elevation points, temperatures can drop upto -10°C, especially at latter part of the season when winter closes in.

Off-Seasons Trekking

You can trek on the Mardi Himal Trek route during the winter season (December, January, and February) as well, but the journey is more demanding. Snow can accumulate near the High Camp and Mardi Himal base Camp, which can make the final ascent more challenging. Temperatures also drop significantly during the night, often below freezing points. However, the trail becomes very quiet and offers a peaceful experience for the well-prepared trekkers.

As for the monsoon season (June, July, and August), it brings heavy rainfall, slippery forest trails, and frequent cloud cover that obstructs the views. Leeches are also a common problem while trekking in the lower forested sections. Although trekking in the monsoon is possible, this season is generally not recommended unless you are seeking solitude and an emerald landscape and don’t mind limited visibility. As there can be weather disruptions, you need to be flexible with your travel plans during this season.

Packing List for Mardi Himal Trekking

Packing for the Mardi Himal Trek 8 Days is not about carrying more; it is about packing smart. In just a few days, you will move from the warm lakeside climate in Pokhara to the cold alpine ridge beneath the north-central Himalayan peaks. It means that your gear must be able to handle the changing temperatures, wind exposure, and long uphill climbing stretches without wearing you down.

Mardi Himal Trek Accommodation and Food

One of the reasons why the Mardi Himal trek feels accessible and authentic is the traditional teahouse system that this route has adapted to. While following the Mardi Himal Trek route, you will stay in locally run lodges from the lower forest settlements all the way upto High Camp. Although the facilities are simpler than those at Everest Base Camp or Annapurna Base Camp routes, they are comfortable enough to make the journey enjoyable. In the lower part of the trail, the teahouses are relatively well established.

The rooms have a simple twin-sharing setup with wooden beds. You will get foam mattresses, pillows, and blankets. However, room heating is not available, and you will have to pay extra for using hot showers, internet, and charging services. At the teahouse located in the higher part of the trail, the facilities are more basic. Room remain twin-sharing, but the insulation is minimal. Nights get colder, especially above 3,000 meters. That’s why you are recommended to bring a reliable sleeping bag.

Despite simplicity in this off-beaten route, the hospitality remains genuine. Many teahouses are family-operated, so you will get insights into the intricate mountain culture and traditions. The warm family atmosphere and social interaction centered around the traditional stove become the heart of the evening experience.

Food on the Trail

The food on the Mardi Hiomal trail is simple, healthy, and filling, especially designed to fuel long uphill treks. As the ingredients are carried by porters and mules from the lower villages, menus are surprisingly consistent across the teahouses. However, as you climb higher, the variety starts to gradually decrease. The main focus of meal preparation at the teahouse is high-carbohydrate and warm meals that provide steady energy in colder conditions.

Here is a more detailed look at what you can expect on the menu at the teahouses:

Breakfast Menu

  • Tibetan bread
  • Chapati with jam or peanut butter
  • Toast
  • Pancakes
  • Porridge
  • Muesli
  • Cornflakes
  • Eggs (boiled, fried, scrambled, cheese omelet)

  • Soup (vegetable, tomato, mushroom)
Food in Mardi Himal Trek

Training and Preparation

Mardi Himal Trekking may be a short Himalayan trek, but it ascends fast. Within a few days, you will traverse from the lower hills of Pokhara to Mardi Himal Base Camp at an altitude of 4,500 meters (14,763 feet). Although the journey is not technical, the route is continuously uphill from Forest Camp, and the final ridge push demands stamina in the thin air conditions. Thus, proper preparation makes a huge difference between reaching one point to another and genuinely enjoying the experience.

Although you don’t need to be an athlete, you do need endurance. This trek route involves 5 to 6 hours of walking per day on average. Likewise, there is steady elevation gain along the exposed ridges and long descents. That’s why it is important to improve your cardiovascular endurance, leg strength, and stability. You can include exercises like brisk walking, stair climbing or hill hiking, jogging, or cycling, and incline treadmill walking to build your lung capacity and stamina. Your focus for the training should be on sustained effort rather than speed.

Mardi Himal Trek Package Cost

The Mardi Himal Trek Annapurna is considered one of the most affordable short Himalayan adventures in Nepal, especially when compared to major routes like the Everest Base Camp Trek and the Annapurna Circuit Trek. As the Mardi Himal Trek itinerary does not require domestic flights and you will travel via land, the logistics remain simple and cost-efficient. For an 8-day itinerary, the Mardi Himal Trek costs typically range from USD 600 to USD 1,200 per person. There are several factors that influence the overall cost of the package, such as group size, season of your choice, transportation choice, accommodation, guide and porter services, and overall standard of the services offered.

Most well-organized Mardi Himal Trek packages at this price range cover all necessary permits, a licensed trekking guide, porter support, teahouse accommodation, three meals a day, hotel accommodation in Kathmandu and Pokhara, ground transportation for the full itinerary, government tax, and official service charges. Travel Visa

Before you join this exciting trail of the Annapurna region, you need to sort out your entrance in Nepal. You can apply for the Nepal tourist visa in different ways, but the most feasible option is the Visa on Arrival. This is a straightforward process that most nationalities can obtain without complicated procedures. Most travelers can obtain the Nepal On Arrival Visa at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu or designated land entry points.

The process to apply for this visa is simple: → Fill out an online form (can be filled out before arrival from the official website)→ Present your passport (should be valid for at least the next 6 months from the date of arrival)→ Provide a passport-sized photograph→ Pay the visa fee in cash (USD is widely accepted). Typically, there are three types of tourist visa based on duration:

  • 15 Day Visa— USD 30
  • 30 Day Visa— USD 50
  • 90 Day Visa— USD 125

As this Mardi Himal Trek itinerary lasts 8 days, a 15-day visa will be sufficient for your trek. If you want to take your time to explore other major highlights of the country, before or after the trek, you can also go for the 30-day visa. There is also a provision for extending your visa; for that, you will need to buy a minimum of 15 day extension, which will cost around USD 45.

**Note: Make sure to carry small USD bills or the equivalent amount in cash for visa payment. Indian citizens do not need a travel visa to enter Nepal, but should carrya  valid identification card**

Exploring Mardi Himal Base Camp – A Journey with Eco Holidays Nepal

I came to Nepal in March 2025 and visited Pokhara. From there, I went to Sarangkot, where I had a stunning view of Mount Annapurna, Amadablam, Dhaulagiri, and many other peaks in the Annapurna region. I wanted to explore these peaks further, so I asked the local people where the best and easiest place to visit by trekking . They suggested the Mardi Himal Base Camp trek. I contacted Mr. Dhruba, and he took care of all the arrangements for me. Everything was handled by him – from guiding me to organizing the accommodations and providing all the necessary support. The guide was excellent, and the accommodation facilities were great. After returning from Mardi Himal Base Camp, I also visited Dhampus, which was another beautiful spot. I want to thank the whole team for their support in making my Mardi Himal trek a successful journey. Thanks a lot!

I had a guide who helped me with everything, so I didn’t have to worry about food, water, or other essentials. The guide took care of all the arrangements, and I felt fully supported throughout the trek. I am extremely satisfied with the help I received from Eco Holidays Nepal.
